I was in Inca Trail in April 1999. It was around the end of rainly season. We had light rain occasionally, but mostly sunny or overcast during the day and rained every night on the 3 night camping. Morning and night are fairly cold, so warm clothes are must.

1st day, most are gentle uphill.
2nd day, as anny mentioned, is the longest and the toughest. The most difficult part is to hikie over the 4200M Dead Women's Pass. People have different degrees of reation to the altitude, but everybody (including 2 close to 60 years old couple from Holland) made it fine. After Dead Woman's Pass, mostly are steep downhill with occassional long uphill. It was a tiring day and I fell asleep in less than 1 min in tent.
3. 3rd day, most downhill. Easiest day. You'll get a chance to take a shower at one rest stop.
4. 4th day, very early morning start (I think we woke up around 3 or 4) approach the Sun Gate for sunrise. Unfortunately, we didn't see sunrise because of overcast. But the final approach to Machu Pichu was just inspiring. When you finally see it amid the misty mountain peaks.. your spirit soars and you forget all the hardship you have been through - the sweetest hardship you ever have.
My whole 15 days Peru trip was done by a Canadian based adventure travel company, so I don't have much information about the local tour, but I am sure there are a lot in Cusco.
